Job Overview
The Automation Manager will plan and execute project and process improvement work in our manufacturing plant. This role will also be responsible for developing our maintenance technicians’ ability to troubleshoot and modify logic and controls.
Job Responsibilities
- Cooperatively with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance provide leadership and technical expertise to develop and implement automation strategies and solutions
- Provide project engineering and management functionally for controls related projects including sourcing, scope development and budgeting thru full project delivery
- Assure all of electrical and controls related work in the plant complies with regulatory compliance
- Provide support for cost improvement, quality improvement, continuous improvements and reliability programs such as OEE, SCADA, and or MES platforms
- Develop protocols, root cause analysis, procedures and resources to improve equipment breakdown, technical support to the plant and support improvement in downtime performance
- Work with vendors, contractors, governmental regulatory agencies (USDA, NYSDAM, OSHA, DNR, EPA, etc.) to the extent needed to complete the various projects
- Develop a robust plant start procedure with vendors for new processes and lead process of simulation and validation during commissioning
- Update HMIs and computer systems as equipment and production needs dictate
- Develop team members in the areas of technical automation knowledge and competency skill sets
- Maintain accurate records.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager
- Works closely with the quality production department to assure efficient / safe production line equipment.
- Assure a safe work environment in compliance with all OSHA / EPA guidelines.

Required Education and Experience
- BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science Engineering
- 5+ years of related experience and/or training or more
- Fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes, ideally process or batch manufacturing
- Extensive knowledge of Rockwell/Allen Bradley PLCs and ability to write PLC programs and make necessary changes, minimally ladder logic
- Experience and knowledge of production machinery and equipment
- 4 years of maintenance management experience or more.
- Broad depth of experience and knowledge of production machinery and equipment.
- Ability to make sound, independent decisions based on functional expertise and experience.
- Ability to administer a proactive management approach.
- Ability to provide leadership, support, communication and direction to production supervisor, as well as line personnel.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, troubleshoot and problem solve beyond routine issues.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience in the design and implementation of controls systems to manufacturing equipment and systems.
- Knowledge and ability to synthesize new and emerging technologies into manageable and practical applications
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects in a team-based environment and operational setting
- Strong communication and presentation skills (oral, written, and listening)
- Knowledge of Rockwell FactoryTalk suite of software
- Knowledge of OT systems and networking
- The ability to effectively use Excel, Word, MS Project (or equivalent project management software), AutoCAD, and Revit
- 7+ years of food manufacturing experience or more
Working Conditions
• Repetitive work in a fast-paced production environment with average temperature of 50-60 degrees F.
• Ability to frequently handle material from floor-to-waist, waist-to-shoulder and pushing/pulling/carrying.
• Ability to constantly stand/walk; bend/flex/extend neck; frequently grip/reach/lift/pull with L/R hands.
• Product weight: up to 100 lbs
• Use of motor skills to safely drive tow motors or other motorized vehicles in tight quarters.
• Hair nets, ear plugs/muffs, hardhats, and/or safety glasses may be required.
